With the release of Velocity, guitarist/composer David Pritchard continues his exploration of music for multiple acoustic guitars, also integrating harpsichord, flute, marimba, electric guitar and acoustic bass guitar into the mix. The result is a uniquely hypnotic, mesmerizing musical journey characterized by shifting overlapping meters and sparkling melodic patterns.
On some pieces, David has overdubbed all the acoustic guitar parts; on others he is joined by Ken Rosser, Adam Castillo, and Jack Majdecki, all members of his acoustic guitar quartet. As a unit, they weave a gentle yet potent energy into DavidÌs compositions; the music is further energized by the addition of acoustic bass guitarist Ed Lucie on several tracks. Velocity also features three pieces for classical guitar, the first being A Silent Dream with its haunting and highly cinematic melody. Clear Margin unites the modern with the historical in an exciting jazz-tinged duet with DavidÌs harpsichordist son Ian, a graduate student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Breathing Room, with David on classical guitar and Susan Winsberg on flute, is an exciting blend of minimalism and Brazilian influenced rhythms. Floating Bridges, with David Johnson on marimba joining the guitar quartet, cooks with a subtle Latin groove. Ultimately, these melodic and rhythmic threads are woven seamlessly into Velocity, a beautiful musical tapestry.
DavidÌs jazz-fusion roots inform many of the pieces on Velocity. David has performed with Gary Burton, ex-Mother of Invention Don Preston, pianist Billy Childs, and recorded two jazz LPÌs as a leader for Inner City records which also featured Patrice Rushen, Chester Thompson, and Freddie Hubbard.
